Why are they attacking ArabCrunch.com?

  if you are following us on arabcrunch.com we faced a DDoS attack on thursday that brought our site down for 4 days, the attack happened while we were at a preparation meeting of ArabCrunchStart initiative in Amman, after we managed to defend against the attack that is still in going and bring the site back to life, the attackers seemed to move ahead with their next step  destroying our brand and our Search engine ranking and results as they were able to install code on wordpress that add Vigra title to keywords that brings our search results on google with such as this one:

  

  "Effects Of Allegra - Buy Online Viagra, Cialis, Levitra"

  these link bring you to ArabCrunch Article that has the real title!

  because of these attack, work with ArabCrunchStart has been postponed for a week, launching of the next version of ArabCrunch.net has been postponed.

  We are still investigating the code and how they did it, the question is why they are attacking ArabCrunch.com?

  Could it be possible that these attacks started after Bassel Ojjeh appeared on Aljazeera TV talking about Google Tashkeel? Probably your website was picked up automaticlly after being showed on youtube and aljazeera. Sorry to hear that though :(

   i agree that there are robots but run by human-beings as you pointed out, who choose to attack ArabCrunch specifically, I do not think this is a chance that robots just found us.. it is a targeted attack as we did not become popular over night.

  The robots are on a schedule just like Googles. Of course there are operators but for the most part bruteforce attacks and injection attacks are timed with having enough trojaned PC's available to launch an attack (not many have their own machines or IP addresses do the work). This takes time and timing. But once it starts it's like an unending firehose.

  Thanks for the answer Carl, but why did they start now why did the robots started working now? we did not have any defenses before? and why one attack after the other?

  Well, you don't want to personalize it because it wil just make it harder to deal with.

  I have learned since my days of having popular sites on Dreamhost that the ddos attack is not an aimed attack. Many of them are started because a site gives up a specified set of responses to scripts that are already running through the web. Once these responses are gathered and parsed then the robots go to work. This why multiple captcha's and form element switching are pretty much the norm for community and and download sites. They obsfucated the standard responses needed for the automation to happen.
